Jamaica doilies are a unique form of 19th and early-20th-century Caribbean folk art. Instead of being crocheted or made of paper, these antique ornamental mats were hand-crafted from indigenous Jamaican plants, making them highly sought-after collector's items today.
These delicate, bespoke pieces were traditionally made from a combination of the following natural elements:
Lace Bark: The central mesh or fabric of the doily was crafted from the inner bark of the native Jamaican Lacebark tree (Lagetta lintearia).
Palm Sheaths: The borders were typically cut from the spathe or leaf sheath of the Cabbage Palm (Oreodoxa oleracea).
Tropical Foliage: The doilies were intricately decorated with pressed, dried ferns and hand-painted watercolor florals native to Jamaica.
Fringe: The edges were often finished with fiber from the French Cotton pod
